The Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) Mid-Atlantic and its affiliated Laborers-Employers Cooperation and Education Trust (LECET) fund recognized 16 area contractors for their exemplary safety records at an awards ceremony today at the LIUNA headquarters building in Washington, DC.

“Our contractor partnerships work because we share similar values,” said Dennis L. Martire, LIUNA Vice President and Mid-Atlantic Regional Manager. “We take great pride in the fact that our contractors are strong job site safety advocates as we are at LIUNA.”

In 2023, Mid-Atlantic LIUNA/LECET first sponsored the safety awards as a way to honor their signatory contractors that made job site safety a priority. In its first year, 12 contractors won safety awards.

Mid-Atlantic LECET/LIUNA review the contractor applicants primarily on their safety or “experience modification rating,” from the previous year. This measure compares the number of employees, the number of hours worked, and the number and severity of on-the-job accidents. Any LIUNA signatory contractors working in the Mid-Atlantic region can apply for the award.

“We commend our contractors for setting a high standard for workplace safety and we appreciate how hard they work to minimize hazards to help ensure that our LIUNA members get home safely to their loved ones each day,” said Marshall Brown, Mid-Atlantic LECET Director. “A safe workplace allows LIUNA laborers to work confidently and productively. That’s a win for both workers and employers.”

Mid-Atlantic LECET/LIUNA’s contractor partners have access to LIUNA’s training centers where instructors are equipped to provide training in a wide range of construction skills that meet the contractors’ workforce needs. By working with LIUNA, contractors can be sure that they will have access to a safe, skilled workforce that has gone through proper training.
